When an Exin Airlines Antanov 26 aircraft crashed in Lake Ülemiste, there were potentially huge implications for the environment and the potable water supply to the city of Tallin. The plane was attempting an emergency landing at Tallin Airport in March 2010. The situation required the highest standard of waste management.
The airframe broke the frozen surface of the reservoir, depositing fuel and hydraulic fluids in to the water beneath; a great concern for the environmental contamination.
Accurately assessing the full environmental impacts of such accidents is often a painstaking job, says Paul Gibbs who led the 4R Environmental Consultants team, undertaking an independent assessment of the crash site.
